Mercy Ministries expanding

images You know what the situation with Mercy Ministries highlights, is the inadequate funding for mental health.  That people have to resort to visiting wacky religious organisations to get help.

Anywho on to the story:

Mr Peter Irvine (no longer legally or financially connected with Gloria Jeans) spoke in Bendigo to an audience of 50 people eager to bring Mercy Ministries to the area.  The following excerpts come from the Bendigo Advertiser

On the controversy he said:

...the allegations made against the organisation were untrue.

‘‘They said we lock girls in rooms - we don’t have locks on the doors,’’ Mr Irvine told The Advertiser in a visit to Bendigo yesterday.

‘‘We don’t do exorcisms, we don’t do any of those things.

‘‘A couple of the girls (reported in the media) do have psychological issues… they make a lot of things up.’’

Mr Irvine must be the one official psychologist that Mercy employ?  On the subject of expansion:

Mercy Ministries runs residential programs in Sydney and the Sunshine Coast.

It plans to open centres in Townsville, Perth and Melbourne.

‘‘The program is 95 per cent successful,’’ Mr Irvine said.

‘‘There’s five per cent who leave the program half way because they can’t hack the discipline."

He forgets to mention Perth we the company has bought land.  He also has upped the estimate on the success of the program from 90% to 95%.  What I find extremely telling and callous is the "can't hack the discipline' comment.  Yes psychological problems can be fixed by discipline.  Hey I know lets just enrol everyone in the Army, but wait that's right the Army accepts Lesbians, whereas Mercy don't.

I sincerely wish the government would step in and shut these idiots down.

Um.. I don't deny the existence of God!

But I will say that Mercy Ministries have fabricated the statistics they have released the the media. They are claiming that only six girls have 'failed' their 'program'. There are more than that who I know just through church and aquaintances.

Since the media have exposed Mercy Ministries, several more girls have come forward and spoken out about the abuse, exorcisms and other 'treatment' they received at the hands of this cult.

Anon,

Don't worry about the comment above the comments blog, that's just to keep "crazy" christians away, simple but it works :)

there are a few people of faith here that seem to put up with my opinions :)

On one level I don't really care if an organisation is christian, only that they do no harm/ provide the best service possible.

I would prefer that people did not have to rely on religion but hey...

I actually don't deny the possibility of a god. I see no evidence for him,it her.

The number was derived by an independent survey group contacting approximately 300 girls who have gone through the program.

Matthew,

Have you a link? I don't think that many women have been through the program in Australia.

LOL Matthew!!! Rubbish!!!

As if they would need to do an 'independent survey' to find out who was brainwashed *cough* 'graduated' and how many left because of mistreatment and abuse.

If 95% are so called 'graduates', and 20+ young women who left or were kicked outhave come forward, you don't need to be a mathematician to see that Peter Irvine is spouting lies in the figures he has given.

One minute he is claiming that 96 individual young women have 'graduated', then, oh wait, he means 95% graduated, oh no now he means 90%, and only 6 didn't graduate, oh wait, now 20+ have come forward who didn't graduate... somebody can't count and can't keep track of their own lies either. It would be extremely amusing if it wasn't for the fact that they are unprofessional and unqualified, not to mention unethical, and playing with the illnesses that young women are suffering.

Matthew is either very confused, or a huge liar. By Irvine's own admission only 100 or so have been through the program in Australia.
